This FAQ lists some of the most common questions and answers encountered on the Emailer-Talk mailing list. We strongly encourage you to read it in its entirety. The traffic on the Emailer-Talk list can get pretty high and many of the messages are repeats of the questions answered here. This FAQ is not an official statement from Apple, Claris or FileMaker. Frequently Asked Questions I've got a question/problem/concern/suggestion. Where do I turn? This mailing list is one of the most valuable resources for information about Claris Emailer. Other places where you can get information:
Who is Fog City Software?Fog City Software developed Claris Emailer. Claris bought Emailer from Fog City Software. Fog City Software is no longer involved in the development of Claris Emailer.
Does Fog City Software or Claris/FileMaker run this mailing list? No. SkyTouch Communications does.
Is there a digest version of this mailing list?Yes. To receive messages from the list in digest format, send mail to with:
in the message' subject. You will also need to unsubscribe from the non-digest version of the list unless you wish to receive both.
How can I use Claris Emailer to prevent my In Box from being overwhelmed by all the emailer-talk messages?Use the following Mail Action:
Use this to automatically file messages into a folder just for emailer-talk. Make sure you set the mail action to file, rather than change priority.
A feature of the Filing Cabinet does not work as I'd like it to. Why doesn't it work more like the In Box and Out Box?
There have been statements that in future versions, the interface will be consistent across all views of mail both in lists, and in open messages.
Will the Filing Cabinet have hierarchical folders and/or use single Mac files for a whole mailbox instead of an individual files for each message?
The Filing Cabinet will be changed in many ways and it sounds likely that these changes will be included in a future version.
How do I set a group of recipients to CC or BCC?Before you add the recipients, set the last empty recipient line to CC or BCC. All subsequent recipients will be set to the same type.
How do I quote text from the original message when writing a reply?Select the text you wish to quote before clicking the Reply button. This feature is documented in the manual, but is not obvious to users of the trial version (or those who don't read the manual and don't think of it because it's too easy and natural!) If you prefer, you can use the clipboard: Copy and then Paste As Quotation from the Edit menu. Of course, this also works when quoting documents from applications other than Claris Emailer.
Although I love using Claris Emailer, I've got a feature request. Will it be considered? When will the next release be coming? All suggestions are considered by Claris. The feature sets for the most imminent new releases are already decided. For strategic marketing reasons, Claris cannot comment on specifics of unreleased versions. However, here are some of the most frequently requested features:
The developers monitor this list and online forums and listen closely to the requests from users.
My PPP connection does not disconnect after accessing my Internet account.Because of the current architecture of Macintosh PPP, Claris Emailer has no direct control over the PPP connection. It is opened automatically by the system when Claris Emailer attempts to connect to the Internet via TCP. However, Claris Emailer comes with an AppleScript script which you can use in an Claris Emailer Schedule that connects to PPP, accesses your mail, and then automatically disconnects. To use this you must have AppleScript installed on your Macintosh. AppleScript is included with System 7.5, and is available as an add-on for System 7.0 or 7.1. Apple Script is also available in several books about the Mac, the Internet, and AppleScript. Another possibility is to set a short timeout on your PPP software. This way, you don't accidentally stay connected for a long time when you can't use a script (e.g. when doing Connect Now). For most people, this means setting an Idle Timeout of 3 minutes in the ConfigPPP control panel.
What are the command-key shortcuts? Most of the command-key shortcuts for Claris Emailer buttons show when you hold down the command key for about 5 seconds. Some that are not evident this way or via the menus are:
In version 1.x:
In version 2.x:
How can I use multiple signatures, choosing the one I'd like for each message?
Claris Emailer 1.1 does not support this. The best way to do it right now is to exploit Claris Emailer's support of Drag and Drop. (You must be using System 7.5, or have the Drag and Drop and Clipping extensions installed.) Keep a clipping for each signature on your desktop, and then just drag in the one you want. Another alternative would be to use OC Signatures, which requires the utility OneClick. This gives you a popup list of signatures to paste into your mail. Finally, you can use a utility like QuicKeys, SpellCatcher (Thunder 7), or TypeIt4Me that allows you to automatically type preset hunks of text by entering particular keystrokes. Also, there is a program called SignatureQuote which installs FKEYs that automatically put two different signatures into the clipboard.
Can I open URLs from Claris Emailer?Yes. You need to instal the Internet Config System. See the FAQs installed in your Support Files folder for more information.
Does Claris Emailer support Drag and Drop?Yes. There is extensive support for Drag and Drop throughout Claris Emailer. See the FAQs installed in your Support Files folder for details.
Is there a way to get random signatures on my email?
Use the Internet Configuration System and Random Sig available on the Fog City web page.
Why don't my page up and page down keys work? You probably have QuicKeys mapping the keys. Claris Emailer supports the page up and page down keys directly. Use QuicKeys to disable the mapping of the keys or remap them back to page up and page down within Claris Emailer.
How does Claris Emailer wrap lines? This actually has a complex answer. The short answer is that lines are wrapped after the 75th character unless the line begins with a >. If the line begins with a >, then the line is wrapped after the 80th character. This allows up to 5 levels of quoting.
Are there plans to support IMAP/QuickMail/FirstClass/MS mail in a future release?Claris Emailer supports multiple services and it is reasonable to expect that support for other services will be added in the future. Specific plans have not been released.
I was getting mail from my Internet mail server and I cancelled the connection. Why when I connected again, did I receive all the mail again? This is dependent on your mail server. Claris Emailer tells the mail server to mark each message as read as it reads them. Some servers do not save this information until the connection is completed. You might want to talk to your provider about this behavior.
There can be confusion in the Filing Cabinet between the "Delete Folder" and "Delete File(s)" buttons. Are the developers aware of this?Yes. This issue was addressed in version 2.x.
Will there be a Windoze version of Claris Emailer?Claris Emailer 2.0 for Windows is scheduled to ship in the US in Early 1997.
Can you only export selected addresses? It's all or nothing. Hey, how many email programs even have export?
How can you get several addresses in the address book into a group?Very easily, just drag and drop them.
How do I unsubscribe from the list?To unsubscribe from the list send mail to with:
in the message' subject. If you are subscribed to the digest version of the list, send mail to with:
in the message' subject.
Who is processing the list requests? Most (un)subscription requests are processed automatically without human intervention. The -request server usually does quite a good job in discriminating between (un)subscribe requests and messages intended for the maintainer. If you'd like to make sure a human reads your message, make it look like a reply (i.e. the first word in the Subject: field should be "Re:", without the quotes of course); the -request server does not react to replies.
Can I send multiple (un)subscription requests?Do not send multiple (un)subscription or info requests in one mail. Only one will be processed per mail.
